If you’ve tapped your ATM card against a credit card terminal to pay for something, then you’ve used NFC.
Your ATM card has an NFC chip in the plastic and basically the credit card machine is pre-programmed to know what to do when it comes ‘near’ your ATM card.

Now here’s the rub, NFC works with Android in an open way where any Android phone can tap any NFC sticker but with Apple you need an app installed (because Apple are very tight on security so that want an app in there as a buffer!).
